05/04/2016 - Release Battle P.1/3

Hi there,

So I feel a bit conflicted releasing the battle system in it's current state, but it's live! The reason I'm conflicted is because I have much more work to do before it's actually done. To keep it short, here's what's done:
  • Complete engine for the battles, victory and defeat scenes, etc.
  • Basic text for combat, player, companion and opponent
  • First defeat scene for slime girl monster in the sewers
  • Added a sleep function inside your house to restore the player's health to full, just so you don't get stuck (new)
Here's what's not done:
  • Interesting combat and mechanics,
  • Multiple defeat scenes
  • Actions on victory
  • A way to restore your HP after combat, aside from potions (sleeping in your bed for a full restore)
  • Scene to explain combat and how companions move around/appear before/during combat
  • Scene on first defeat, after respawning in your home
There's still much more to go before this is finished, so I'd appreciate it if you don't criticize too harshly. Suggestions and feedback are always welcome!

I'm going to get some sleep, it's been a long night.

Sincerely Yours,
JV

  1. So I got the encounter to come up, but the main screen simply says that I'm still in the sewers. The only reason I know I'm in combat is because I can see actions I can take in the fight. If I click on them, nothing happens though. Only Run and Change Stance work.

    1. I see, sorry for the inconvenience! I'll check it out right now.

    2. I don't seem to be able to reproduce the problem. Did you make a new account or load an old one? Loading an old save can produce strange results at the moment

  2. I loaded in my save, making a new save let me do the battle. The battle itself is good, but when I press "Wait" it says that I decided to wait out my turn, yet I'm still dealing damage. Not a big deal but I had to go through 4 or 5 slimes to see the defeat screen because of it. Defeat scene was good, I expected one paragraph or so, pleasantly surprised at it's length. Could be longer still, but well done so far.

    1. Oh, sorry about that. I uploaded the wrong file about 6 times in a row, wondering why the fix worked locally but not live.

The slime girls outside of the sewers will be stronger, these are kind of a friendly introduction to the combat system. That being said, they are still a little too weak.

Defeat scenes are definitely going to be longer, but it's something that will evolve and expand as the game does. I can't finish a lot of the content that is currently there, because the engine doesn't support it yet.

    2. But thank you for letting me know by the way! Glad I could suprise you, heh.

  3. Couple bigger errors with the writing: When you bring out your companion at the library, she says twice in a row that humans and monsters have different auras (btw, you don't use an apostrophe when you're just making something plural. "Aura's" would be referring to something belonging to the aura, or a contraction of "aura is"). And the main description of Bart's house instead says it's Bard's house

And before you disappeared you teased a map that would be really helpful, especially in the sewers where you can forget which way you came from after a fight, is that still going to be a thing?

    1. First off, welcome again!

I fixed the mistakes you mentioned, thank you for letting me know!

There were plans for a minimap, but I'm not very happy with the way it looks. It basically shows the current tile in the center, and all directions you can go to. Since the information is derivative (the colored arrows), I'm not sure how helpful it would be.
